AK has always been one of my favorite financial bloggers. I have been diligently following him, of course, resonating with his pieces of advice over the last few years.
In one of his recent post - CPF-SA savings 10 years from now, AK calculated that he would have S$441,344 in his CPF-SA (10 years from now).
I wondered if I could have that much money in my CPF-SA at the age of 55 (20 years from now). AK's amount is probably a benchmark.
My CPF-SA savings in January 2017 stands at S$100,747.52.
I will be assuming the same as AK's post - The CPF annual contribution limit remains unchanged in the next 10 years at S$37,740 and applies the following allocation rates:
Age above 34-45: 0.1891
Age above 45-50: 02162
Age above 50-55: 0.3108
There is one assumption I will be making here for my calculation - I am able to meet the CPF annual limit each year and that means I have to be employed till 55.
I am able to meet the CPF annual limit till date since I am employed. However, I am not sure if I do walk away from my full-time employment.
Next 10 years - Age 35-45
I will be contributing S$7,136 each year to my CPF-SA based on the ratio of contribution to the SA being 0.1891.
At the age of 45, I would have S$238,233.54 in my CPF-SA
Next 5 years - Age 45-50
I will be contributing S$8,159 each year to my CPF-SA based on the ratio of contribution to the SA being 0.2162.
At the age of 50, I would have S$335,806.97 in my CPF-SA.
Next 5 years - Age 50-55
I will be contributing S$11,699 each year to my CPF-SA based on the ratio of contribution to the SA being 0.3108.
At the age of 55, I would have S$474,460.70 in my CPF-SA.
This amount is slightly higher than AK's projected CPF-SA savings. However, AK is 10 years my senior. Inflation will reduce the real value of money over time. The projected S$474K is definitely smaller in real value as compared to AK's amount. The biggest difference will be that AK has accumulated most part of his CPF-SA savings without employment.
Well, we can't compare. AK is in a different league. Someone did tell me "Own time own target. As long as we meet the end goal."
